Well I haven’t really committed to doing my Weekend Reading feature like I should have. I’m still planning to do it but I usually forget about it until Saturday and then there’s really no point.
So as a way to make it up to you, I’m recommending you check out Engadget’s latest ‘Switched On’ column. In “Padded Windows” Ross Rubin brainstorms about the possible advantages of Microsoft sticking to their desktop OS for the emerging tablet war.
As you know, I have had a lot to say about Microsoft’s tablet strategy. There have also been plenty of rumors that Microsoft could be heading in the right direction with Windows 8 and that it could be happening sooner than we thought. But at the end of the day, Microsoft will have to execute a modern, lightweight touch-driven OS that can still work with the hundreds of thousands of legacy software available for the desktop OS—and that’s certainly a tall order.
