Despite being around since 2007 (and predated the iCloud by quite a few years), Microsoft's SkyDrive has not exactly become the forefront of cloud computing within those last four years. We were excited to see the previously rumored redesign of the SkyDrive website with HTML5, and now it's been confirmed by Microsoft itself: say hello to the new SkyDrive.
So what's changed? For one, SkyDrive has been significantly simplified in both the interface as well as its functionality within the Live ecosystem. For example, instead of you documents being saved at office.live.com and your photos being saved at photos.live.com, every file in your SkyDrive is now found in this new centralized interface. Speaking of the interface, Microsoft is also touting a major reduction in the amount of clicks taken to reach your files, more support for SkyDrive groups within the UI, a design that is consistent across Live and thus user-friendly, and support for Pinned Sites in Internet Explorer 9 which will let you jump into your folders quickly and create new documents right from your taskbar.
One of the biggest revamps of SkyDrive is its photo gallery feature, which has been completely redesigned with HTML5 to create a nice mosaic view of all of your photos. SkyDrive also promises to generate thumbnails to "reflect the way you took the picture, whether it be a portrait, a landscape, or a panorama shot." The new layout is also supported across multiple resolutions, which should make the lower end device owners pretty happy. The redesign also supports playback of full 1080p H.264 video but will only play files less than 100MB in size.
