Featured in the Windows Phone Marketplace yesterday, the game Cliffed by IUGO Mobile Entertainment caught my attention with its colorful graphics and vibrant art direction. While the game presents itself as a platformer upon first glance, once the game starts you’re treated to a frenetic and addictive arcade game that takes a new spin on gameplay similar to games like Snake.
Essentially, you use the two large arrows on the sides to maneuver your character through gaps in platforms below you as you try to avoid getting ‘cliffed’ by the vertical wall that begins moving towards you over time. Of course obstacles like boulders get in the way and to avoid these you have to pass through the closest wall to come out of the other side and keep descending. The game also offers some incentives for playing levels including unlocking more characters to choose from, more locations, and faster speed settings to challenge yourself even more. There’s also a high scores chart that can be filtered based on the speed level.
Cliffed runs buttery smooth and in a game that requires fast instincts and accurate timing, the excellent performance certainly helps. The game is also extremely easy to control thanks to the huge arrow buttons on the sides of the game area. While making the game area larger would have been nice, the handling of the controls is a pretty fair trade off for the extra real estate. Adding these qualities to the previously mentioned graphical style and you’ve got a strong one-two punch.
There are a few downsides that the Windows Phone port of Cliffed has compared to its iOS counterpart and that’s mostly due to the lack of features in comparison. The iOS version includes Online Multiplayer, Local Multiplayer on the iPad, and the quality of the graphics don’t seem quite as crisp. To add insult to injury, the Windows Phone port is actually more expensive registering at $2.99 compared to the original’s $1.99.
While to some this may just seem like a cash-in port of an iOS game for a new platform, in this case that’s not necessarily a bad thing. When a game is of this high quality and the port actually does a good job of reproducing it on a different platform, the result is a game that’s worth your while. Cliffed is the kind of pick-up-and-play game that is perfect on a mobile platform like Windows Phone. It’s fast, addictive, looks great, and loads of fun. The price seems a bit high for its lack of features compared to its iOS counterpart, but the quality of the gameplay is just too excellent to ignore. If you’ve got three bucks to spare and want to pick up a game, my first suggestion for you is Cliffed.
