It looks like the tables are finally turning in Microsoft's favor (sort of). In the latest ComScore market share figures, Microsoft's piece of the mobile OS pie in the United States is currently sitting at 7.5%, having dropped by 0.9% since the worrying last report. So we're sure you're asking yourself, "Wait, how is a drop in total market share a good thing for Microsoft?" Good question! Here's an outline of Microsoft's market share since Windows Phone 7's debut last November:
  • November 2010: 9%
  • December 2010: 8.4% [0.6% loss]
  • January 2011: 8% [0.4% loss]
  • February 2011: 7.7% [0.3% loss]
  • March 2011: 7.5% [0.2% loss]
  • April 2011 (prediction): 7.3% [0.2% loss]
  • May 2011 (prediction): 7.2% [0.1% loss]
  • June 2011 (prediction): 7.2% [0.0% loss]
As you can see, while Microsoft's market share is indeed falling, the rate at which it is falling is actually decreasing over time. If that sounds too much like an algebra question for you to wrap your head around, it basically means that for now there's more people leaving Microsoft (most likely Windows Mobile) than there are people buying new MS phones (Windows Phone). But now more and more people are buying Windows Phones which means Microsoft is slowly on its way to improving. Looking at those numbers, the monthly percentage drops are reducing by 1 or 2% which means that if Microsoft keeps up this pace it should see its first market share stop dropping by June and start increasing by the end of July.

The numbers are likely improving because Microsoft hasn't been sleeping on the job: the Dell Venue Pro is now on AT&T, the HTC Trophy could be hitting Verizon as soon as next week, Sprint's HTC 'Mazaa' could launch soon after, and AT&T's HTC HD7S is likely going to be released before June ends. Clearly Microsoft is in it to win it or die tryin'.
