Microsoft Discontinues Zune Hardware, Software Still Kicking

Unexpected news coming out of Microsoft's Zune division today, and if you were looking forward to a new Zune media player I don't think you're going to enjoy this. A report coming from Bloomberg says that Microsoft has decided to stop producing Zune hardware and that the decision is, "helping the company shift its focus to mobile phones".
Rumors were floating around for the past few weeks that Zune would be killed off, but those suggested that the name was going to be changed and none of the rumors indicated that the hardware-side of Zune would go under the axe.
The work done on the Zune hardware is said to have had a gigantic influence over what we know as Windows Phone today. The device that had the most relation to their modern OS was the Zune HD which prominently featured a similar Metro UI design language in a touch-based environment. To say the Zune was essential to the birth of Windows Phone 7 would be a massive understatement.
