Forbes has heard from Carlo Bozotti, the Chief Executive of European manufacturer STMicroelectronics, that the favored ST-Ericsson chipsets will indeed be sticking with Nokia in spite of their Windows Phone 7 arrangement with Microsoft. What does that mean? Well Bozotti went on to say that their powerful dual-core U8500 system on a chip will be among the first of their processors used in a Nokia Windows Phone. Yessir, it looks like Windows Phone is about to enter the age of dual core. WMPoweruser looked up a few details about the U8500 and it looks quite impressive with features like full 1080p recording & playback, support for up to WXGA resolution (1280×768), high performance graphics, dual camera support, HDMI-out support, HSPA+ support, and more. That's already monumental news (and a possible hint at what to expect at next Tuesday's event) but the biggest takeaway from this story? The fact that Qualcomm, so far the only chipset manufacturer that supports Windows Phone, is going to be losing its tight grip and ST-Ericsson may be sneaking in to compete for some of its business. While in the Forbes article, Bozotti says that Nokia is still working with Qualcomm on Windows Phone handsets, it's clear Nokia will probably favor ST-Ericsson due to their history of collaboration with Symbian devices.
